6/23/2014: Day 2

Today in class we started to make a transition from the Empathy phase into Define.

1. Project PROBLEMS.
How can we get more people to know about registering to donate bone marrow.
2. Design Thinking MODE.
     Empathy/Define
3. TOOL.
     Surveys. Audience: BYUI students.
4. What did I HOPE TO GAIN from the tool?
We thought that this survey would help us to define the problem more and that it would give us a better idea as to why people have or haven't registered to be bone marrow donors.
5. What did I GAIN from the tool?
I think this was a really good tool! As we tried to think of reason why people wouldn't register we kept hitting a wall and couldn't find too many absolute reasons.  This survey helped us to get real answers from a wide range of people.  Some people knew about registering and some had never heard about it.  Some were all willing and wanting to join the cause, while others were scared of the pain and the commitment to the cause.  It was interesting to hear all the different reasons students had for registering or not.
6. What do you think the SOLUTION is?
From our data through the survey, I think that there needs to be a better way to get more people to know about registering to donate bone marrow.  Along with this, I think that the process of donating needs to be shared.

Today we took a survey around campus.  We walked around and talked to different people that we didn't know, in an attempt to keep the bias away.  We asked a simple question, "are you registered to be a bone marrow donor?"  This was a yes or no question.  So, once they answered, we asked why they had or hadn't. It was surprising to hear of so many students who had no reason for not registering, especially since it is such a simple process.  There were many reasons given, some more reasonable than others.  Once we has our data, we entered it into Mural.ly.  This is the tool that we are using and liking because it is a great place to see all of our information in one place.  We put the information in and then Lindsay stayed and made it more appealing.  So far things are going great!
