6/18/2014: Day1

In my class, Design Thinking (DCM110), we are utilizing what we have learned about the design thinking process, with the help of the D-School Bootleg Bootcamp.  We have been divided into teams to solve different problems.  The problem that my team and I chose is: How might we increase the number of registered bone marrow donors to save more lives?  Here is what we gathered in Day 1 of the process:

1. Project PROBLEMS.
How can we get more people to register to be bone marrow donors?
2. Design Thinking MODE.
     Empathy.
3. TOOL.
     Empathy maps.
4. What did I HOPE TO GAIN from the tool?
Who is involved in bone marrow donations?
5. What did I GAIN from the tool?
We found who was involved.  We then went on to write what we thought the 3 main people involved experience with this.  I liked this approach.  It helped us narrow down the first and simpler map and it helped us think from multiple perspectives of the 3 people.
6. What do you think the SOLUTION is?
My first thought is that the solution is going to be to spread the word through word of mouth and social media.  Social media is such a prominent thing these days, it only seems logical.

Below are some pictures of our empathy maps.  We first found who is involved in bone marrow donations in any way possible.  We then chose the 3 people we found to be the most directly affected.  With those people in mind, we did a "say, think, do, feel" empathy map for each of them.

One thing we all thought while doing this, is that this is real.  This is a somewhat sad and depressing issue and we are all in the fight to spread the word about bone marrow donating.
